British choreographer Akram Khan does something unique and captivating when he blends classical North Indian kathak (Khan’s ancestry is Bangladeshi) with contemporary dance forms. Here the international dance star combines members of his company with those of the National Ballet of China to create this thoroughly entertaining vision of a modern-day Babel. Called bahok (Bengali for “carrier”), the piece depicts a globalized world in which disparate people connect briefly and communicate the things they carry with them: memories, experiences, dreams, and reasons for leaving home.
