Film: A Girl Like Me, Directed by Kiri Davis

Restaging Dr. Kenneth Clark and Mamie Phipps Clark’s “doll test,” which was instrumental in the Brown vs. Board of Education U.S. Supreme Court desegregation case, high school student/filmmaker Davis discovers little has changed since the 1950s. The young people interviewed are still affected by standards of beauty imposed by popular culture and internalized racism. Heart-wrenching and topical, Davis’ project for an after-school program received the Silverdocs festival Audience Award and the Diversity Award from the Media that Matters Festival.
